Estonian troops to take part in anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan

TALLINN. Jan 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Ten professional Estonian servicemen will go to Kyrgyzstan to support the international force ensuring security in Afghanistan.

The Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee made the decision concerning the servicemen's participation in the anti- terrorist operation in Afghanistan on Monday, the Estonian newspaper Postimees reported. Representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs and defense made reports at the session.

The Estonian troops will serve in the Baltic unit, which will include thirty people (ten troops from each of the three Baltic countries). The unit will form part of the Danish peacekeeping contingent and will support western allies operating in Afghanistan.

According to early reports, the mission of Estonian servicemen will last for six months. The country will spend EEK4.5m (USD250,000) on the operation.
