Federal aviation hammers rebels in southern Chechnya

KHANKALA. Jan 31 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal aviation has inflicted bomb strikes on mountainous areas in the south of Chechnya where many rebel groups are located, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

Four SU-24 Fencer frontline bombers accomplished combat missions in the breakaway republic on Wednesday. According to preliminary data, they destroyed a rebel camp in the mountains and two strongpoints. Besides, they set up roadblocks on mountain paths, a military said.

MI-24 Hind helicopters escorted seven federal convoys and inflicted five missile strikes on small rebel groups and their fortifications on Wednesday. MI-8 Hip helicopters flew two surveillance sorties to detect rebel concentration areas.
