Russian defense minister warns world against dangers of nuclear terrorism

MUNICH. Feb 4 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has stated that "the world community is too slow in taking measures to prevent terror, which may entail catastrophic consequences."

"There is a particularly serious threat of damaging nuclear facilities and nuclear power plants, seizing various types of weapons of mass destruction, setting off powerful bombs in public places, destroying dams, and of other actions that may lead to environmental catastrophes," Ivanov said, addressing an international conference on security in Munich on Sunday.

He said that "the terrorist acts against the U.S., in terms of their method and impact on the public, are reminiscent of the apartment building bombings in Russia in 1999." "The terrorists' 'signature' could be clearly seen in both cases - in Russia and in the U.S. they used various technical means," the Russian defense minister said.

He also said that "terrorists are trained in numerous bases and centers, where they perfect their skills in conducting strategic actions."
