New types of terrorism endanger international community - Russian DM

ROME. Feb 4 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has warned the international community about a new type of terrorism - "information or electronic" terrorism.

"Modern terrorists are using the achievements of scientific- technical progress," Ivanov said at an international conference in Rome on Monday.

"This progress gives rise to new forms of terrorism, whose destructive force keeps mounting," the minister said. "Modern society has grown dependent on databanks and transmitted information in everyday life."

"Defense, the activities of secret services and law- enforcement departments, banking and so on depend on that. Vital spheres of state activities have become exposed to computer pirates. Their coordinated actions may paralyze a country and cause large-scale fatalities," Ivanov said.
