Police kill 2 deserters from army unit near Russia's Ulyanovsk

KAZAN. Feb 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The police of the Tatarstan autonomous republic on Monday night killed two paratroopers who had fled form their unit near Ulyanovsk with their weapons.

Tatar Deputy Interior Minister Rakhil Nagumanov told Interfax that Almaz Shageyev was shot dead during an exchange of fire with the police near Lashi railway crossing in the Buyinsk district of Tatarstan. Three police officers were also killed. The other deserter Private Mikhail Sukhorukov managed to escape.

Several hours later he was killed offering armed resistance near the village of Cherki Grishino in the same district.

The two paratroopers deserted from their unit 25 kilometers north of Ulyanovsk Sunday night. During the pursuit they opened fire many times killing a total of eight persons and wounding several more.
