Kyrgyz-U.S. exercises begin on outskirts of Bishkek

BISHKEK. Feb 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Kyrgyz-American exercises in the framework of the NATO Partnership for Peace program began on the outskirts of Bishkek on Tuesday.

Sources at the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry told Interfax that the exercises involve special formations of the Kyrgyz Defense, Emergencies and Interior Ministries and the National Guard. The American side is represented by 10 military instructors.

The exercises are meant to simulate hostilities in the mountains and rehearse interaction between army and police task forces in operations against international terrorists.

Special significance is being attached to mountain warfare. Landing and the evacuation of wounded personnel from combat zones are also expected to be practiced.

The exercises will end on February 14.
