SUKHUMI. Feb 6 (Interfax-AVN)- Some members of the rebel group led by field commander Ruslan Gelayev are still hiding in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, Chief of Staff of the Abkhaz Armed Forces Vladimir Arshba said on Wednesday. Arshba said that he does not know the exact whereabouts of Gelayev. "After his unit was destroyed in Abkhazia's Kodori Gorge in the fall of 2001, the wounded Gelayev was rescued by Georgian forces and received treatment in the Georgian town of Rustavi. His track has been lost since then," the chief of staff said. "The remaining fighters of his unit again retreated to the Pankisi Gorge, with 10 to 15 rebels still hiding in Abkhazia's Kodori Gorge," Arshba said. The chief of staff said that Gelayev's rebel group used the Pankisi Gorge as a base for preparing its invasion into Abkhazia and was transported to the Kodori Gorge with the direct support of the Georgian Defense Ministry and special forces.
