Ex-senator proposes financing Russian nuclear security programs via debt payments

MOSCOW. Feb 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Former U.S. senator and prominent politician Sam Nunn has proposed that the United States should buy part of Russia's foreign debt from its creditors and channel reimbursement to the implementation of nuclear security programs in Russia.

The international Nuclear Threat Initiative foundation will recommend this option of exchanging debt for security guarantees to the U.S. administration, Nunn, co-chair of the foundation, said at the U.S. and Canada Studies Institute on Friday. He expressed hopes that other Western countries would follow suit.

The foundation will disburse USD1m for a chemical arms scrapping plant in the Kurgan region, he said.

This allocation will finance "new infrastructure" on the site, he said.
