Moscow gives green light to technical assistance to Afghan army - Afghan minister

MOSCOW. Feb 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Afghan Defense Minister Mohammad Fahim Khan has said his request for technical and logistical support from Russia for the Afghan Armed Forces has been granted.

At a Tuesday news conference at the Interfax central office in Moscow he said his country does not need new armaments.

He said Afghanistan has a sufficient amount of "arms and weaponry, mainly of Russian and Soviet make."

In addition, during recent fighting with the Taliban, the Afghan army "managed to seize enormous quantities of arms," the minister said. For this reason the Afghan army needs mainly "logistical and technical support," he said.

"Considering the fact that the weaponry and technical systems of the Afghan army have always been based on Soviet arms" Afghanistan is requesting such assistance from Russia, he said.
