Interior Ministry troops destroy five rebels in Chechnya

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Feb 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of the Interior Ministry troops have eliminated five rebels near the Oktyabrskoye village in Chechnya, Lieutenant Colonel Igor Sofronov, chief of the press service in the Volga district of the troops, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

The servicemen of the district's Shumilovo operations brigade were attacked when they were scouting a route from the Oktyabrskoye and Mesker-Yurt villages. First the rebels blasted a radio controlled landmine and then fired grenade launchers and assault rifles at the servicemen. A reserve led by brigade commander Colonel Vasily Bykadorov arrived at the site of the engagement to assist the servicemen, while a mortar battery of the brigade provided fire on the attackers.

While examining the site, the servicemen found corpses of five rebels, two Kalashnikov assault rifles, nine hand grenades, two RPG-18 grenade launchers and a makeshift explosive device. No casualties were registered among federals.
