Northern Fleet prepares to raise first compartment of Kursk sub

ST. PETERSBURG. Feb 14 (Interfax-Northwest) - The Russian Northern Fleet will set up a special-purpose expedition to raise the fragments of the first compartment of the nuclear submarine Kursk, the fleet's headquarters told Interfax on Thursday.

After receiving instructions from the Russian Navy Staff, the number of people who will take part in the expedition will be determined, Interfax was told.

The expedition will include fewer Northern Fleet combat ships than the expedition that raised the sub's hull in 2001.

As before, the goal of the expedition is to achieve maximum coordination in the operations performed at sea and organization of a clear system for managing these forces during the operation, a headquarters representative said.
