Officers of Armenian penitentiary system to be retrained in line with European standards

YEREVAN. Feb 14 (Interfax-AVN) - The first 500 officers of the Armenian Justice Ministry's penitentiary system have started a one-year professional retraining course, the system's chief Nikolai Arustamyan told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

"The main aim of the officers retraining is to introduce a new approach to accomplishment of their missions and to brief specialists on the European standards of relations between the administration and prisoners," Arustamyan said.

The majority of officers attending the course hold high- ranking positions, and their retraining should result in humanization in general, Arustamyan added. They will be taught by competent teachers that underwent thorough selection. Later the course will involve international experts in social and psychological retraining of personnel.

The retraining course is supported by the Yerevan affiliate of the Soros Fund and OSCE bodies.
