Federals destroy 29 rebels in Chechnya this week

KHANKALA. Feb 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Three larghe-scale special operations carried out by federal forces in the Chechen-Aul, Starye Atagi, Shali and Tsotsin-Yurt villages this week resulted in elimination of 29 extremists, three rebel bases, over 30 dug- outs and arms and ammo caches, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus said on Friday.

Meanwhile, federal sappers defused over 20 powerful explosive devices, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

In the course of the operations federal servicemen confiscated some 100 pieces of small arms, 51 grenade launchers, over 90,000 small-arms cartridges, almost 300 artillery and mortar shells stocked in hiding places, as well as 35kg of explosives.

Engineering reconnaissance units prevented three sabotage and terrorist acts in densely populated areas of Grozny and the republic's Urus-Martan district.
