Russia to sell portable SAM systems, their production technology to Vietnam

ST.PETERSBURG. Feb 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will transfer to Vietnam 50 Igla portable surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems (SA-18 Grouse according to the Western classification) and their production technology, general director of the local LOMO corporation Arkady Kobitsky told a Wednesday news conference.

LOMO is a developer and producer of self-homing warheads for the Igla system.

Kobitsky said that under a USD64m contract the systems would be delivered this year, their production technology and bench equipment in two years.

LOMO will profit USD16m from implementation of the contract, he said.

The Igla system was designed by the Machine-Building Design Bureau in the town of Kolomna in the Moscow region. Their chief producer is the Degtyarev plant in the town of Kovrov.

Igla has entered the inventory of 15 foreign nations. It was put up for export in 1994.

LOMO is Russia's largest developer and producer of self- homing warheads for portable surface-to-air missile systems. Among its competitors on the global markets are Raytheon of the United States, BGT of Germany and Sagem of France.
