Armed Forces chief-of-staff refutes withdrawal of Russian force headquarters from Tbilisi

MOSCOW. Feb 21 (Interfax-AVN) - The headquarters of the Russian troops group in the Trans-Caucasus will not be withdrawn from Tbilisi, Russian Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff Anatoly Kvashnin told reporters on Thursday.

"The withdrawal of the headquarters is not discussed, the headquarters will only be reduced," Kvashnin said.

The headquarters "became somehow redundant but it does not mean that all of its bodies will be deleted," the chief-of-staff added.

"All changes in the Russian troops group in the Trans- Caucasus, including its headquarters, will be made in the course of the Russian-Georgian negotiating process," Kvashnin said, when asked by Interfax-Military News Agency to comment on the possibility of the headquarters' relocation in the future.

"A reasonable basis for control will be created as a result of optimizing the staff structure of the Russian troops group in the Trans-Caucasus. Why 6,000 soldiers should have 200 headquarters officers and 10 generals?" he asked.
