238 policemen from Nizhny Novgorod killed in Chechnya campaign

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Feb 22 (Interfax-AVN) - As many as 238 policemen from Nizhny Novgorod have died in the course of the Chechnya campaign, chief of the region's police department Lieutenant General Vyacheslav Kanygin told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

At present 64 policemen from the Nizhny Novgorod Guard special purpose unit are staying in the Staropromyslovsky district of Grozny. "700 more policemen from Nizhny Novgorod will head for service within the Gudermes temporary police department in the near future," Kanygin said.

According to him, 524 Nizhny Novgorod policemen received state awards and 105 were given the Order for Courage in 2001. "Mainly the awards were given to those who had served in Chechnya. Policemen of the Nizhny Novgorod department received the highest number of awards among similar department of the Interior Ministry," Kanygin added.
