St. Petersburg to host conference on nuclear submarine development

ST.PETERSBURG. Feb 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The local Malakhit naval machine-building design bureau will host a conference on the history and problems of development of multifunctional nuclear submarines on Friday, Colonel Vladimir Bulgakov, member of the event's organizers committee, told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Malakhit Constructor General Vladimir Pyalov, the bureau's chief engineer Vitaly Astapenko and former commander of the Northern Fleet's 1st submarine flotilla Vice Admiral Vladimir Prusakov will be among the speakers at the conference, Bulgakov said.

The event will feature a traditional meeting of veterans of the 6th submarine division, also known as "the underwater destroyer division". The unit included the legendary K-222 submarine of Project 661 Goldfish that hit the record underwater speed of 44.7 knots (82.8kmph) and the K-278 Komsomolets submarine that hit the record depth of 1,000m.

The conference is hosted by Malakhit because the design bureau has developed many unique submarines, including the Gepard low-noise nuclear submarine, the latest underwater vessel commissioned by the Russian Navy.
