Russian General Staff commission to inspect airborne units, headquarters in March

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A Russian General Staff commission will carry out a comprehensive inspection of all airborne units and the Airborne Staff in March, a competent source in the Defense Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

The decision to dispatch the commission was made personally by Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces Anatoly Kvashnin, the source said.

The commission will involve officials of all main and central departments of the Defense Ministry and General Staff as well as of headquarters of all military districts where airborne units are stationed. It is tasked to carry out a comprehensive check of combat readiness, equipping and manning level of airborne units, the state of military discipline and order, and implementation of regulatory documents on the training of permanent readiness units.

The commission will also check combat readiness of the Airborne Staff led by First Deputy Airborne Commander Lieutenant General Nikolai Staskov in the process of relocation of its bodies to a reserve command control post.

The source did not rule out that "radical measures" concerning the future of the Airborne Troops will be made after "the unprecedented inspection".

The Airborne Troops comprise the 106th division headquartered in Tula, the 98th division in Ivanovo, the 76th division in Pskov and the 7th division in Novorossiysk.
