Federal positions in Chechnya came under rebel fire almost 50 times over past week

KHANKALA. March 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The positions and facilities of federal troops and the police in Chechnya came under fire about 50 times during the week ending on March 10.

The headquarters of the federal force in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency that most of the attacks occurred at night: 32 out of 49 were made in the evening and night.

Rebels have scaled up mining activities on roads, especially those used by federal military convoys, a spokesman for the headquarters said. They blasted 10 vehicles last week, including several pieces of military and armored hardware on the road between Msker-Yurt and Argun.

Sappers involved in engineering intelligence found over 170 explosive devices, including 17 powerful landmines.

Rebel formations were engaged several times in the Kurchaloi district and the villages of Shatoi, Mesker-Yurt, Argun and Prigorodnoye.

Over 10 pinpoint ID checks were carried out in Grozny last week. Federals performing the checks detained over 90 people, found several arms and ammo caches and destroyed over 30 illegal oil refineries, the spokesman said.
