Georgia to establish additional posts on border with Russia in May

TBILISI. March 22 (Interfax-AVN) - The Georgian state border guard department will open over 10 additional posts on the Georgian-Russian border in May, the department's director Valery Chkheidze told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

The posts will be established on the Dagestani, Chechen and Ingush straps of the border, as well as in Abkhazia's Kodori gorge and on the Kabardino-Balkarian strap where a reserve picket is supposed to be established.

According to Chkheidze, the establishment of the additional posts and picket on the northern borders is not coordinated with Russia, for "the strengthening or weakening of the border guard regime is an indisputable right of an independent country."

The strengthening of northern borders should not be of any concern for the Russian party, with which the Georgian border guards are maintaining "business and constructive relations."

At the same time Chkheidze did not rule out the fact that acts of provocation might take place at the Chechen strap of the Georgian-Russian border when snow would melt in the mountains.
