Federal police detain six rebel field commanders in Grozny

GROZNY. March 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Six rebel group leaders, 30 guerillas and eight criminals who are on the federal wanted list have been detained by law-enforcers taking part in the Angel operation in Grozny, Colonel Sayed-Selim Peshkhoyev, head of Chechen Interior department, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

The local police have started search activities in the framework of the operation since early March, Peshkhoyev said. They have arrested four people for assault, six for involvement in sabotage and terrorist acts and 15 for other crimes committed in the breakaway republic.

Two assault rifles, three PM pistols, two Stechkin automatic pistols and six grenades have been seized in the course of the operation.

"The Chechen police have done a great job in the framework of the Angel operation. They have checked some 8,000 people and 1,340 vehicles and searched 1,700 houses. Moreover, Chechen policemen have been checking people in public transport and taxis in Grozny and its suburbs every day."

According to Peshkhoyev, Chechen police units are involved in a special operation that started in Grozny on March 21, as well as in reinforcement of a raid party in district of the republic.
