Over 3,200 troops killed in Chechnya since August 1999

MOSCOW. March 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Since the beginning of the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus in August 1999, 3,220 servicemen of the federal forces have been killed.

Sources told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday that 8,972 servicemen were wounded in this period.

They said the figures cover only servicemen from the Defense Ministry and Interior Ministry troops.

According to the sources, 2,331 servicemen of the Defense Ministry and 889 servicemen of the Interior Ministry troops were killed.

The number of wounded amounts to 5,898 in the Defense Ministry and 3,074 in the Interior Ministry troops.

Twenty-six servicemen are considered missing.

Interfax has no updated official statistics on losses.
