Russian Air Force commander praises results of CIS Unified Air Defense System's training

MOSCOW. April 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Air Force Commander Vladimir Mikhailov said on Tuesday he was satisfied with the results of command post training that involved control bodies and on-duty forces of the CIS Unified Air Defense System.

"We can surely say that the CIS Unified Air Defense System provides reliable protection of aerial borders of the Commonwealth," Mikhailov told Interfax-Military News Agency commenting on the training's results.

"Participants in the training practices prevention of CIS state border violations by foreign aircraft, compulsion of hijacked aircraft to landing, and provision of aid to aircraft in force majeure circumstances. They also practiced accomplishment of other missions related to strengthening of the Commonwealth's aerial borders," the commander said.

"Moreover, application of a radar picket plane in interaction with fighter aviation was practiced," Mikhailov noted.

The training involved eight nations of the Commonwealth, these being Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. Units of the Ukrainian Air Force and Air Defense took part in the exercise with the Russian Air Force on a bilateral basis following a separate plan and concept, Mikhailov stressed.

Over 50 aircraft taking part in the exercise flew over 60 sorties, the commander noted. In general, more than 700 servicemen were involved in the war games.

Control over the training was exercised from the Central Command Post of the Russian Air Force.
