Modernized AL-31F aircraft engine to be exhibited in Moscow

MOSCOW. April 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The local Salyut machine- building production association with exhibit the modernized AL- 31F jet engine at the Dvigateli 2002 international engine show that is to take place in Moscow from April 16 to 19, Salyut Director General Yuri Yeliseyev said on Thursday.

The engine powers fighters of the SU-27 Flanker family, Yeliseyev told Interfax-Military News Agency. It was modernized by Salyut's design bureau in cooperation with the Central Institute of Aviation Machine Building, All-Russian Institute of Aircraft Materials and other R&D institutes of the aircraft industry.

The engine's thrust increased by 10 percent as a result of the modernization. Flight tests of the engine on SU-27 fighters are in progress.

The AL-31F bypass engine with the common afterburner was designed by the A.Lyulka-Saturn JSO. It powers SU-27 and SU-30 fighters, as well as their modifications. The engine's take-off thrust is 12,500 kilogram per second. The AL-31FP engine with thrust vector control, the AL-31FN engine and other derivatives have been designed on the basis of AL-31F. The SU-27 and its modifications have made over 30 world records of climb rate and horizontal flight altitude.

Salyut will have the largest section at the Dvigateli 2002 show. It will cover the area of 300 square meters. Salyut created the section on an individual order for the first time.

The seventh Dvigateli show is held in line with a Russian government decision. The Russian Aviation and Space Agency is appointed organizer of the exhibition.
