CIS Unified Air Defense System postpones regional command post establishment to late 2002

MOSCOW. April 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The CIS Unified Air Defense System has postponed establishment of a regional command post in the Caucasus to late 2002, a competent source in the CIS military cooperation coordination headquarters told Interfax- Military News Agency on Friday.

The rationale behind establishment of the post in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don is to improve control over forces and means of the nations signatories to the Collective Security Treaty, primarily over those of Armenia and Russia.

The main reason for the postponement is the lack of funds for the post's establishment and servicing. Each signatory to the treaty was supposed to allocate some RUB250m (USD8.01m) for the post, but most of them failed to raise the money.

Earlier this month, the CIS nations postponed establishment of another regional combat post, the source stressed. The post was to be set up in Kazakhstan.
