Volga-Ural military district command concerned over growing crime rate in 2nd army

YEKATERINBURG. April 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The number of crimes in the 27th permanent-readiness motorized rifle division increased by 30 percent in a year, a spokesman for the Volga-Ural military district headquarters said on Friday.

The division is organic to the 2nd joint-arms army stationed in the city of Samara, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"The crime ratio in the division made 14.2 per every 1,000 servicemen, which is the worst result in the Armed Forces," the spokesman went on. According to him, "district commander Colonel General Alexander Baranov flew to Samara on Friday to analyze the work of the army command on maintenance of military discipline."

"Colonel General Baranov is not satisfied with the work of 2nd army officials, especially those serving in the 27th division, for they failed to change the situation in subordinate units for the better," the spokesman said. The highest increase was registered in the number of crimes against property, cases of hazing and desertion, he stressed.

"Criminal manifestations have acquired more daring and aggressive forms, and the number of crimes classified as grave or committed by groups of people has started to increase," the spokesman said.

The district command is especially concerned with the information on the criminal situation provided by officials, for it does not represent the true state of affairs. "Many commander still conceal negative tendencies characterizing the state of crime in subordinate units," the spokesman concluded.
