KHANKALA. April 15 (Interfax-AVN) - As many as 47 attacks on federal positions were registered in Chechnya last week; 31 assaults were carried out at night, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.
The spokesman said that guerillas had blasted ten federal armored vehicles operating in Chechnya. The explosions occurred in the villages of Gikalovsky and Bachi-Yurt, as well as in the Urus-Martan district. Sappers detected and defused 22 powerful explosive devices.
Federal troops engaged rebel gangs in Grozny's Leninsky district, as well as in the Urus-Martan and Shali districts of Chechnya. Colonel of the so-called Ichkerian Security Service Abzuyev was killed in the course of a special operation in the Shali district.
Special operations were conducted in 14 Chechen localities, and 89 people were arrested on suspicion of being members of illegal guerillas groups. 82 of them were released after a check, nine are still kept under custody for lack of identification documents.
Three guerilla bases, 11 arms caches, nine trench-shelters, two observation towers and 14 illegal oil refineries were destroyed by federal servicemen last week. Five guerillas were arrested.
