Abkhazia says Russian peacekeepers, UN observers must control Georgian troops withdrawal

SUKHUMI. April 16 (Interfax-AVN) -Abkhazia does not trust Georgian reports on the complete withdrawal of Georgian military units from the Kodori Gorge, Abkhaz acting Defense Minister Givi Agrba told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"The withdrawal of Georgian troops should be closely monitored by Russian peacekeepers and UN military observers. Monitoring is needed both at loading points as well as at the places of their arrival in the Georgian territory. Otherwise Georgia will just hide its troops in forests of the Kodori Gorge," Agrba said.

The Abkhaz party will discuss "only mechanisms of control over the withdrawal of Georgian troops from the Kodori Gorge" at a forthcoming meeting in Tbilisi on Wednesday," the acting minister stressed.

Agrba once again confirmed that the ultimatum concerning the withdrawal of Georgian troops from the area was still in force. "If Georgian troops do not leave the gorge I will deploy mine in the area," he stressed.
