South Anti-Terror 2002 exercise ends in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK. April 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The first stage of the South Anti- Terror 2002 exercise conducted by the CIS Anti- Terrorist Center ended in Bishkek on Tuesday.

Representatives of the special services of eight countries took part in the exercise.

The first stage of the training showed that representatives of the law enforcement structures from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine and Armenia have demonstrated greater interest in strengthening interaction in the fight against international terrorism, Boris Mylnikov, the head of the CIS Anti- Terrorist Center, told reporters on Tuesday.

One of the most important aspects of the exercise was cooperation in the legislative sphere in the fight against international terrorism.

Mylnikov said that, in spite of the fact that the mass invasion of Central Asia by international terrorists from Afghanistan is not likely now, radical extremist forces are sure to try to destabilize the situation in Central Asia and special units of the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center may be used for repelling the threats posed by international terrorism on the southern borders of the CIS.
