Georgia to introduce professional military service, more military ranks

TBILISI. April 16 (Interfax-AVN) -Georgia is likely to introduce professional military service and new military ranks in the near future, a spokesman for the Georgian parliament said on Tuesday.

"The parliamentary committee on defense and security approved today amendments to the law "Concerning Liability to Carry Arms and Military Service"; the amendments were drafted by the Defense Ministry," the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Defense Minister David Tevzadze told a committee session that "amendments to the law proposed by the Defense Ministry envisage establishment of professional sergeant posts and their manning on a contract basis." Other amendments envisage establishment of a special HR service in the Armed Forces and formation of a real military reserve.

Under the amendments, the citizens recruited to the Armed Forces can be assigned the rank of private, lance bombardier, lance bombardier first and second class. Those who sign a contract for military service can be assigned the rank of corporal (specialist), junior sergeant, sergeant, senior sergeant, sergeant master, battalion sergeant (staff sergeant), brigadier sergeant, chief sergeant and lieutenant sergeant.

In addition, Georgia will introduce the rank of brigadier general, Tevzadze said.
