TBILISI. April 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The Telavi 2002 exercise of the Georgian Armed Forces has been postponed to a later date, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency.
The exercise was to begin in eastern Georgia on Wednesday.
"The decision to postpone the training is motivated by growing tensions in eastern districts of the republic, including Abkhazia's Kodori Gorge," the spokesman said. According to the ministry's leaders, deployment of an additional military contingent to eastern Georgia is "inexpedient" under current circumstances.
The new date of the exercise is not fixed yet, the spokesman said.
An earlier approved scenario of the training envisaged a practice in state border coverage. The war games were supposed to involve officers of the Armed Forces General Staff, Land Forces Staff, special purpose units, 11th motorized rifle brigade and Air Force.
