Russia to build fourth-generation submarine in 2003

MOSCOW. April 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Construction of the fourth- generation diesel submarine of the 667 Lada project, Anur-1450 Class, is to be completed in 2003, a spokesman for the Russian Shipbuilding Agency told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

The new submarine will be launched on the day of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg.

The submarine displacing 1,450/2,100 tonnes was laid at the Severodvinsk-based Sevmashpredpriyatiye enterprise in 1997. The maximum diving depth is 250 meters; operational range is 300 miles per hour at a speed of three knots. Sea-endurance of the submarine mounts up to 40 days. The crew consists of 41 servicemen. The submarine developed at the Rubin Central Design Bureau carries 533-mm torpedoes or mines.

The spokesman said that construction of the Yury Dolgoruky strategic nuclear submarine of the Borei 955 project and Severodvinsk multi-functional submarine of the Yasen 855 project, Granay class in accordance with NATO designation, was to be completed in 2005.

The Yury Dolgoruky strategic nuclear submarine displacing 14,720/24,000 tonness was laid at Sevmashpredpriyatiye in 1996. The maximum diving depth is 450 meters. The submarine carries D- 9RMU ballistic missiles, 533-mm torpedoes, Vodopad missile torpedoes and Igla-1 anti-aircraft missiles. Sea-endurance of the submarine mounts up to 100 days. The crew consists of 107 servicemen, including 55 officers.

The missile carrier is capable of emerging from depth of 55 meters at a speed of six knots, roughness of sea being six or seven units. The submarine is fitted with a floatable rescue unit.

The Severodvinsk submarine displacing 8,600/13,800 tonnes was laid in 1993. The maximum diving depth is 600 meters. The submarine carries Onyx missiles and 533-mm torpedoes. Sea- endurance of the submarine mounts up to 100 days. The crew consists of 90 servicemen, including 32 officers. The submarine is fitted with a floatable rescue unit for all the crew.
