Drug trafficking through Georgia estimated at about USD1bn at black market prices

TBILISI. April 22 (Interfax-AVN) - With the sharp increase in the transit of drugs through Georgia the trade has reached a value of USD1bn, leader of the Alliance for New Georgia faction Irakli Gogava told journalists in Tbilisi on Monday.

"If this tendency persists, Georgia may become the main route of drug trafficking from Asia to Europe," he told journalists in Tbilisi on Monday.

"Drug dealers are using the territories not controlled by the Georgian authorities, I mean Abkhazia and South Ossetia. A part of transported drugs stays in Georgia, which is a real threat to existence of the Georgian people," the lawmaker said.

The country's law-enforcement agencies must deal with the problem immediately, Gogava noted. "Otherwise, Georgia will completely undermine its image on the global scene," he concluded.
