Rebels attack two federal helis in Chechnya

KHANKALA. April 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Chechen rebels have opened fire at two MI-24 Hind helicopters patrolling the vicinity of Khankala, the home of the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus, a spokesman for the headquarters told Interfax- Military News Agency on Wednesday.

"The fire was opened by a group of some 10 people, who were located in the ruins of a former tuberculosis hospital. The main danger was coming from a machine-gun firing point and that is why two helicopters concentrated fire on it," the spokesman said.

The shootout lasted for some 10 minutes. After that the rebels ceased the fire and dispersed. The federals found no dead or wounded rebels while examining the area.

The helicopters were not damaged.
