U.S. military advisors familiarize themselves with Georgian Defense Ministry facilities

TBILISI. May 7 (Interfax-AVN)- A group of U.S. military advisors who arrived in Georgia in late April, continues their assessment of facilities which are expected to host a training session for 2,000 Georgian servicemen, head of the U.S. Equip and Train program Colonel Robert Waltermeyer told a news conference on Tuesday.

Waltermeyer said that the main group of U.S. advisors is expected to arrive in Tbilisi in late May, when command post exercises for Georgian armed forces are to begin.

Georgian servicemen will undergo theoretical training at facilities of the Defense Ministry on the outskirts of Tbilisi. Practical training will start at mountain ranges in late July or early August. Requirement outfit and light small arms will have been delivered from the United States by that time.

The servicemen trained by U.S. instructors will be able to become instructors in the future, Waltermeyer said.

A spokesman for the Defense Ministry told Interfax that certain steps had been made to select the contingent of servicemen who will sign contracts for four to five years. Privates will be paid USD150 per month and officers about USD300 per month.

Tests for the selection of servicemen have been compiled. They are quite complicated, and not everyone will be able to pass them, the spokesman stressed.
