Army aviation helis flew 642 sorties in Chechnya last week

KHANKALA. May 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Army aviation helicopters flew 642 sorties in Chechnya last week, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

The helicopters airlifted over 30t of various cargo and some 2,400 people in the interests of the group's life support. Over 50 flights were intended to cover movement of the troops and 23 fights to escort military trains.

The aircraft engaged in aerial reconnaissance found and destroyed two extremist groups that attempted to plant mines on the railroad near the Dzhalka terminal. Army aviation helicopters delivered 27 landing parties last week.

Meanwhile, frontline aviation flew eight combat sorties. SU- 25 Frogfoot planes inflicted six air strikes on rebel bases in Chechen mountains, and crews of SU-24 Fencer planes flew two combat sorties. As a result, two rebel groups were eliminated on the move in forest-covered mountains in southeastern Chechnya.
