MOSCOW. May 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Rescue work in the damaged hangar at the Baikonur cosmodrome was halted due to strong winds and an approaching thunderstorm, and resumed shortly after that.
"The debris is extremely unsteady and continuing the work could have resulted in new casualties," a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry experts working at the accident site told Interfax-Military News Agency. "The wind has now subsided and a light rain is not seriously hindering the work," the source said.
Three out of five sections of the roof of the assembly and test tower of Pad 112 caved in Sunday morning during repairs. The tower was some 70 meters tall.
Preliminary reports say a repair team of eight was buried under the debris.
