Military commandant's offices to protect intl humanitarian missions in Chechnya

GROZNY. May 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of military commandant's offices in districts and villages will maintain security of international missions delivering humanitarian cargo to Chechnya, Grozny military commandant Major General Vladimir Filatov told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

A request on the matter was submitted by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filatov said. "A corresponding accord was reached at a meeting of officials from the UN Security Coordination Office and Chechen leadership," he said.

"Personnel, armament and combat assets of commandant's companies will be provided for guarding foreign delegations, including both officials and transport convoys," Filatov said. At the same time participants in the meeting did not discuss financial compensation for servicemen's involvement in those events.

Chechen Prime Minister Stanislav Ilyasov said that "Chechen authorities are doing their best to ensure functioning of international humanitarian missions in the republic." In particular, telephones will soon be installed in the UN mission's office in Grozny, he said.

Ilyasov asked officials of international missions to pay more attention to provision of aid to civilians living in Chechnya, not only to refugees staying in the neighboring Ingush autonomous republic. "At present our republic receives only 30 percent of humanitarian aid," he said adding that the Chechen administration was planning to organize the return of all refugees from Ingushetia to Chechnya before the end of summer.
