Russia, Kazakhstan probe Baikonur disaster

BAIKONUR. May 17 (Interfax-Kazakhstan) - The Russian and Kazakh commissions investigating the collapse of the roof on the Baikonur cosmodrome's hangar are still unable to state the exact cause of the disaster.

The commissions investigating the disaster "are working closely," Kazakh Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Vladimir Shkolnik, who heads the Kazakh probe into the disaster, told Interfax on Friday.

The experts have narrowed the number of theories and all of them are currently being "thoroughly worked on," he said.

Three out of five segments of the roof of the 70-meter-high hangar collapsed during maintenance work on Sunday. Seven workers were buried under the debris and their bodies were recovered. The body of the eighth worker, a Belarussian citizen, has not been found yet.
