Eight guerillas killed in Chechnya

KHANKALA. May 18 (Interfax-AVN) - A unit of federal forces revealed a small guerilla group near the village of Avtury in Chechnya's Shali district.

Eight rebels were killed in an armed clash, and law enforcement agencies are now trying to identify them, the headquarters of the unified federal troops group in the North Caucasus told Interfax on Saturday.

The group was detected in the Khulkhau forest at about 8:00 p.m. Moscow time (1600 GMT) on Friday. Its elimination involved officers of the Shali district's temporary police department and members of the composite quick-response detachment, the headquarters said.

The rebels offered stubborn resistance when the federals tried to detain them.

Five assault rifles, a grenade launcher, 12 grenades, a landmine, six electric detonators and ten 200g TNT charges were seized from the site of the engagement.
