About 40 Kaspiysk terrorist attack suspects detained

MAKHACHKALA. May 20 (Interfax-AVN) - About 40 suspects have been detained as a result of an investigation into the terrorist attack that took place in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, on May 9.

Several other suspects have been announced as wanted, Dagestani law-enforcement departments told Interfax-Miliyary News Agency.

"Field commander Rappani Khalilov may be involved in organization of the terrorist act. He led a guerrilla detachment that invaded Dagestan from Chechnya in August 1999," a law- enforcement spokesman said.

Russian Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov told Interfax that he is confident that the crime "will definitely be solved."

He said "investigators are on the right track and we will soon learn the names of terrorists and their bosses."

A landmine went off in Kaspiysk when a column taking part in Victory Day celebrations was passing by. As many as 177 people, including 63 servicemen and 72 children, were hurt in the terrorist act. 43 people, including 12 children, were hurt.
