Kodori Gorge patrols discover no Georgian forces - UN office

TBILISI. May 20 (Interfax-AVN)- A patrolling mission of UN military observers and Russian peacekeepers did not find any Georgian Defense Ministry units in the upper area of the Kodori Gorge, the UN office in Georgia reported on Monday.

The mission established, however, that Georgia had not withdrawn three cannons and 140 boxes of ammunition from the Chkhalta village in the gorge. The cannons and ammo boxes were found in the village by the joint patrol that checked the area from May 3 to 5. "The Georgian party has announced that the cannons and ammo will be relocated as soon as mountain passes open," a statement of the office reads.

The latest mission visited the Tsebelda, Lata, Verkhnyaya Lata, Chkhalia and Atsgara villages of the gorge. It was on patrol from May 16 to 18.

Meanwhile, representatives of Abkhaz authorities are calling for a more thorough check of the Georgia-controlled part of the Kodori Gorge as Sukhumi believes that Georgian military units are still located in this region.
