Terrorist attack prevented in Grozny

GROZNY. May 24 (Interfax-AVN) - A potentially deadly terrorist attack was prevented in Grozny by sappers from the military commandant's office who found two powerful bombing devices in the Leninsky district on Friday, an official in the Interior Ministry department for Chechnya told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The devices contained 3.5kg of TNT each and were filled with screws and nails, the official said. They were packed with radio sets. Sappers took the devices to a safe place and defused them.

The military closed down traffic on the scene of the incident in order to protect local residents. Nobody was killed or injured.

In another development, an arms cache was found in the Shatoi district of Chechnya, a spokesman for the district's temporal police department told Interfax-AVN.

The cache was spotted by servicemen of the military commandant's office who were conducting a special operation on the outskirts of the Borzoi village. Twelve grenade launcher rounds, 17 grenades, about 1,000 cartridges and 1kg of plastic explosive were seized from the cache.

In addition, the hiding place contained four makeshift explosive devices.

The ammo was destroyed by blast on the spot. The search for the arsenal's owner is underway.
