Russia, Armenia to expand military-technical cooperation

YEREVAN. May 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia plans to make new arms deliveries to Armenia, Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo has said.

Rushailo told a news conference in Yerevan on Wednesday that during his talks in Armenia, the sides agreed to jointly upgrade and expand the service life of the Armenian armed forces' military hardware, as well as on new Russian arms deliveries.

According to him, Armenia will also elaborate proposals concerning ways of payment for the deliveries.

The parties to the talks agreed that Armenian military and military-technical specialists would be trained in Russia gratuitously, Rushailo said.

"We consider this cooperation, and issues of training and retraining of Armenian servicemen to be extremely important and of top priority," the Russian official stressed.

Serzh Sarkisian, defense minister and secretary of the Security Council under the Armenian president, said at the news conference that "Armenia has been importing arms not only from Russia, but from other countries, as well." He recalled that Armenia and the United States recently signed a treaty on rearming the Armenian forces.

The agreements only concern conventional weapons, the secretary stressed. "We will not procure a single armored vehicle or small arm above the limit indicated in international agreements signed by Armenia," he added.
