Court will not have killer colonel's mental health checked again

ROSTOV-ON-DON. June 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The North Caucasus Military District Court on Monday rejected a call by Stanislav Margelov, the attorney of the Kungayev family, for a new check of Colonel Yuri Budanov's mental health.

The court has started looking into findings of repeated tests on the body of E. Kungayeva.

In the early hours of March 27, 2000, Budanov arrived in an armored vehicle in the village of Tangi and took the girl back to his unit. There, he interrogated her and then choked her, following which he told his soldiers to bury her body.

During the investigation, Budanov said he had believed the girl was a rebel sharpshooter who had killed his men, but he did not intend to kill her.

Doctors conducting the latest examination found that Budanov was temporarily insane at the time of the killing.
