MOSCOW. June 4 (Interfax-AVN) - The global community efforts to combat international terrorism in new conditions proved to be mainly ineffective, Army General Anatoly Kulikov, lawmaker of the State Duma lower house of Russian parliament, said at an international military and scientific conference devoted to the prevention and settlement of conflicts in the CIS.
"The situation is equally seen in results of anti-terrorist operations in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Middle East and other traditional zones of terrorist activities," Kulikov said at conference which opened in Moscow on Tuesday.
"The efficiency of the anti-terrorist coalition is unfortunately low. It mainly accomplished only military and technical missions so far. The Taliban is dispersed, control over armed formations is disrupted but the main problem remains unsolved; ideological centers of terrorism still exist, rebel network works in many countries of the world, the terrorist number one is alive and still at large," Kulikov stressed.
According to him, the situation is related to the fact that the modern terrorism has not been studied thoroughly so far. "And it happens in such conditions when according to most of the specialists there is a high possibility that terrorist attacks might happen again. We are poorly familiar with reasons behind the events and specific people who trigger the attacks. We only suppose that they are religious extremists, drug-smugglers, transnational corporations which are either criminal or wealthy ones, their principal objective being redistribution of financial markets and flows," Kulikov said.
He said that the efforts of the global community will remain ineffective as long as reasons, launch systems and people from the sphere of international terrorism remain to be unknown.
The international military and scientific conference will end on Wednesday. It involves over 100 people who are officials from the CIS Defense Ministries, law-enforcement agencies and other ministries as well as staff and working bodies, scientific institutes, higher educational establishments and several foreign attaches accredited in Moscow.
