MOSCOW/MURMANSK. June 5 (Interfax-AVN) - A delegation of the association of military attaches accredited in Moscow arrived at the Northern Fleet and put out to the Barents Sea on board the Admiral Chabanenko large anti-submarine ship on Wednesday, aide to the Navy commander Colonel Igor Dygalo told Interfax-Military News Agency.
The attaches are planning to attend live firing of onboard artillery systems, Dygalo said.
A spokesman for the fleet headquarters told Interfax that the 23 naval and defense attaches would drop a wreath in the sea in memory of the sailors who died on the Kursk submarine.
"People from all countries watched attempts at saving the sailors and later awaited for the completion of the operation to recover the submarine," head of the delegation Carl Drege of Germany said.
He recalled that the salvage operation involved representatives from various countries such as Norway, the Netherlands and South Africa.
Every year members of the association make visits to Russian fleets. In 2001 they visited the Pacific Fleet. They visited the Northern Fleet last time in 1997.
During its visit the delegation will meet with Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Gennady Suchkov. The attaches will also visit a marine brigade in the Sputnik garrison to study samples of combat equipment and small arms.
Moreover, they are to visit the Valley of Glory, K-21 Museum of the Northern Fleet in the town of Severomorsk and the Northern Fleet Aviation Museum in the Safonovo garrison.
The delegation will return to Moscow on Friday.
