TBILISI. June 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian law-enforcers have arrested several more officers suspected of pilfering weapons from the Vaziani military base outside Tbilisi.
Major Levan Papashvili, commanding officer of the 11th motorized rifle brigade's 112th battalion, who was directly in charge of weapons storage, already faces official charges, a source in the main military prosecutor's office told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.
The fact that 13 tank machine guns and 24 tank radios were missing from the base was established on June 10. Vazha Kutashvili, commander of a tank battalion of the 11th Motorized Rifle Brigade, was arrested on June 17. He partially confessed his guilt at interrogations. Charges were exhibited against Kutashvili and he was relocated from a detention ward to the Saburtali prison in Tbilisi.
The theft of arms from the Vaziani base and this week's abortive attempt at smuggling a huge batch of Russia's latest antitank systems in Georgia will be discussed at a special session of the Georgian National Security Council that is to take place within a few days.
