Russia's Aviadvigatel designing future engine for medium-range passenger planes

MOSCOW. June 25 (Interfax-AVN) - The Aviadvigatel enterprise based in the city of Perm is developing the PS-12 engine intended for powering medium-range passenger planes, Aviadvigatel Deputy Constructor General and Chief Constructor Alexander Semyonov said on Tuesday.

PS-12 will take part in a competition among engines for the medium-range passenger planes that is envisaged by the federal purpose-oriented program of civilian aircraft development from 2002 to 2010 and until 2015, Semyonov told Interfax-Military News Agency. Clearance of technical requirements for the engine is nearing completion, he said.

According to Semyonov, the design of PS-12 is based on the use of the gas generator of the PS-90A mass-produced engine. It will have a thrust of about 12 tonnes. In the future, a family of engines will be designed on the basis of PS-12. They will power medium-range passenger planes and short-range passenger planes of the TU-334 type.

In accordance with the civilian aircraft development program, the medium-range passenger plane is to be designed from 2002 to 2015. Investments of RUB14.83bn (USD470.78m) are planned for the plane's development. The funds will be raised from the federal budget and from extra-budget sources.

The medium-range passenger plane is intended for transportation of 140 to 170 passengers for a distance of 5,000 to 6,500 kilometers. Its operation will be much cheaper than that of current planes.
