Checkpoint reopens after flood on Russian-Georgian border

STAVROPOL. June 28 (Interfax-AVN) -The Verkhny Lars checkpoint of the North Caucasus regional border guard department reopened on Friday after a five-day break caused by a disastrous flood, chief of the department's press service Sergei Livantsov told Interfax- Military News Agency.

The situation in the vicinity of the checkpoint is calm and there are no traffic jams, Livantsov said. "Another checkpoint, Nizhny Zamarag, is not working yet. The reason is the torrential floods and that is why the Trans-Caucasus highway is closed. Restoration work is in progress in the area," Livantsov said.

He stressed that border pickets of the department and patrols sent by them were still on high alert. Stable communication is maintained with all units. "All reconnaissance and combat operations including creation of ambushes on possible rebels routes are carried out as planned on the border," Livantsov added.

At the same time border guards are involved in the elimination of flood consequences in accordance with a plan of the unified civil defense and emergencies staff, Livantsov said.
